# WhatsApp conversations in Kepler

> Read and reply to WhatsApp chats beside email, link them to records, save attachments, and know what the business and personal numbers can do.

WhatsApp conversations sit in **Communications** beside your email, and on each candidate's and contact's **Communications** tab. Kepler brings them in from two kinds of number:

  - **Your own WhatsApp**: the number on your phone, linked like WhatsApp Web. Only you see these chats unless you choose to share them. See [Connecting your WhatsApp number](/support/articles/connecting-personal-whatsapp/).

  - **A WhatsApp Business number**: a verified number the team shares, listed under **Settings → Phone & messaging**. Only admins manage it. Contact support to connect one.

## Find a conversation

In **Communications**, choose the **WhatsApp** channel (beside **All** and **Email**). If you haven't linked a phone and your workspace has no business number, the tab offers **Connect your WhatsApp** instead. On a record, open the **Communications** tab and pick WhatsApp.

## Reply

Open the conversation, type in **Message on WhatsApp** and press `Enter` to send. Messages are text only, up to 4,096 characters.

  - **New conversations start on the phone.** Kepler replies in existing chats; it can't start a new WhatsApp conversation. In the Compose menu, WhatsApp reads **Reply from an existing conversation**.

  - **Business numbers have a 24-hour window.** WhatsApp lets a business reply freely for 24 hours after the person last messaged. The reply bar shows how long is left, and once it closes you can't send until they message again. Personal numbers have no window, but Kepler paces what you send; see [Sending health](/support/articles/connecting-personal-whatsapp/).

  - **A teammate's own number is theirs.** If a teammate shares their personal chats, you can read them (marked **via [name]'s WhatsApp**) but only they can reply.

  - If a conversation is shared with you as activity only, you see who talked and when, not the messages, and you can't reply.

## Link a conversation to a record

Kepler links a chat to the candidate or contact it belongs to when it can match them. A chat it can't match shows **Not in CRM**: choose **Add to CRM** to create the person, or **Link to record** to pick an existing one. To fix a wrong match, open the linked record's menu and choose **Change linked record** or **Unlink**.

## Save an attachment to the record

Files people send you show in the conversation. Select **Save to files** under one to copy it to the linked candidate's or contact's files (or to the record whose page you're on). If a file couldn't be brought in, for example because it's too large, use **Open in WhatsApp** to get it from your phone.

## Opt-outs

When someone replies **STOP** (or "unsubscribe", "opt out", "remove me") to a business number, Kepler records that they withdrew consent for **Marketing · WhatsApp** on their record, and the reply bar shows **Opted out of marketing · service replies only**. See [Consent and GDPR records](/support/articles/consent-and-gdpr-records/).

> **NOTE:** Campaigns don't send WhatsApp messages. A campaign can include a WhatsApp message task, which reminds you to message the person yourself and waits until you mark it done.
